MC | Tee, Ve-Yin (Assistant Professor, Nanzan University, Faculty of Foreign Studies, Department of British and American Studies) |
We had a great opportunity to listen to a magnificent lecture by Dr. David Minden Higgins, who is a professor from the University Of Leeds. In this lecture we learned how the mysterious and sacred London has been depicted by authors and movie directors. By watching part of the Harry Potter movies based on the novels of J.K.Rowling and “From Hell” directed by Alan Moore, he explained to us how our own identities dissolve in the complexity of London and that because we can easily get in touch with the layers of the history there, we can be exposed to a world full of fantasy. He also introduced us to Romantic writers William Blake and Thomas De Quincy. From this lecture, we learned the strong connection between the perception of horror in London and the consciousness of modernization.

Dr. Higgins's Lecture.
Dr. Higgins spoke on the connection of fantasy, magic, history, and sense of self and big cities, particularly the unique city of London. He talked about how certain places, especially ones with a strong history, maintain a certain atmosphere despite the modernization of the city of London. He connected literature, film, and graphic novels that talk about London with this sense of magic or otherness.
