The most important skill that a interpreter has is the ability to do "active listening". Following the lecture on February 18th, a workshop about learning the theory and skills for interpreting was held. Thanks to the help of Professor Takeda and the Department of British and American Studies' professors, the students could get practical experience in "active listening". Students seemed to grasp the challenges of active listening but also seemed to have fun and learn the enjoyment and thrill of it.

An introductory interpreting class: active listening Workshop.
Dr. Takeda workshop's began with a brief lecture on the importance of active listening and went on to discuss some basic principle of active listening. Afterwards, the students were asked to listen to a short anecdote told by professors of our department and then summarize in as much detail what the professors had said. Finally, they were asked to translate the story into Japanese. Dr. Takeda taught us the basic methodology needed to retain as much information as possible and to focus on the key points of each story.
