Postwar, Japan has had close ties with the United States, not only through a military alliance, but financially as well. America, a country with a long history of great influence over Japan, went through a dramatic change in 2009 with the inauguration of President Obama. Following this, a change also occurred in Japan with the appointment of Hatoyama as Prime Minister. This workshop examines where America is heading and the future of the Japan-U.S. relations.

Q&A From the Students
Mr. Stewart gave a clear and concise review of the history of US-Japan relations, starting with the first Japanese exchange student, "John Manjiro", all the way up to the present time. He gave an overview of the current situation, then went on to discuss Futenma and its relocation, North Korea, and several other recent issues.
He ended his presentation by encouraging the students to be like John Manjiro, a bridge between Japan and the U.S. because that relationship was like a Japanese garden- beautiful, but needing constant maintenance. The lecture was followed by a Q&A session led by three student representatives, Asami Hasegawa, Mikako Narita, and Hanayo Shibata.
