On February 18th, 2011, a lecture was given by Professor Kayoko Takeda from the Monterey Institute of International Studies about "Interpreting as a Profession". She spoke about the history of interpreting, the differences between interpreting and translation, the mechanics and systems of different institutions which require interpreting, and what is needed to become a skilled interpreter. What left a lasting impression was the fact that while skills in your second language are vital, one of the most important things is that you have a deep understanding and wide knowledge in your own language. You need to have a wider range of experiences and be well versed in the matters of international society to truly be a successful interpreter. Listening to her speak about former Nanzan graduates who went on to study at the Monterey Institute helped us to see our future. All in all, this was a very stimulating and motivating lecture.
