The End of My First Semester at Nanzan

2010.09.08

In April, I entered Nanzan University. I remember that I was a little nervous, but more than that, I was excited. This spring semester was my very first semester and it was a satisfactory semester. The reason is that I have worked hard on many things. There are two things that I have mainly worked hard on: improving my English skills and my club activity. First, I made an effort on improving my English ability. Since I have the experience of living in the United States when I was younger, I am able to communicate in English ordinarily. I have not forgotten the language, because I have continued to use English, through English schools, reading books and newspapers in English, watching news and TV programs in English, and many other things. However, when I entered this university, I noticed that there are many students from Nanzan Kokusai High School, which is the school for students who have returned from abroad and foreign students. I was a little embarrassed of the fact that they spoke English better than me. Since then, I have decided to work harder on my English. I read more newspapers and books. In addition to that, I have seen more news and TV programs in English. As a result, my English capacity has improved to a great extent. Therefore, I have made progress in my English during this semester. Next, I devoted myself to the club activity that I have joined. The name of the club that I am participating in is "SKIP". It is the organization for teaching English to children. The reason that I took part in this activity is because I wanted to do something that I can do only during my university years, and I was hoping to throw myself in to something other than studying. We mainly teach pre-school and elementary school students. For the most part, I support the older university students who are teaching. For example, I help the students with the things that they could not understand in class, such as how to write the alphabet and remembering words. I felt so content owing to the fact that they looked so happy whenever I helped them, and they are making considerable progress of learning English. Consequently, I am devoting myself to the club activity that I have worked towards. In conclusion, I worked hard on my English and my club's activities. The reasons are that I started to think that it was necessary to make my English better from the fact that the students who are from Nanzan Kokusai High School had better English skills, and I wanted to devote myself to something other than studying. Furthermore, I would like to continue working hard on these two things and some other things as well.
