深めて!南山GLS 教員紹介
Alfred Rue Burch
My hometown, in Western Washington. It is rarely sunny there, but when it is, it is beautiful.
専門分野
Multilingual Interaction, Applied Linguistics, Language Learning Motivation/Engagement, Task Based Language Learningこの分野を選んだ理由
I personally had a very difficult time learning languages (Spanish in high school, Japanese in college, Korean and Mandarin in graduate school) in the classroom. I have always had more success learning by using the language in real life (even if I must rely on the kindness and patience of others). I believe many language learners are the same way – we all need to use the language in a meaningful way. So, I like exploring how people use their additional languages both outside of the classroom AND how to make classroom language learning and use meaningful.
研究に欠かせないアイテムとその理由
Camera, recorder, microphones, headphones
I record conversations and interactions for my research, which means needing to not only hear what people are saying, but to see their gestures and facial expressions, as well as where they are looking and whether they are using in tools or materials.
趣味
Music. Listening, playing, writing, and recording music. While there are some types of music that I listen to or play more than others, there is no type of music that I don’t like. If it makes me think or feel, it’s good.
好きな食べ物
Hard to say just one, but here are a few from different places that I get a craving for if I haven’t had them for a long time:
Gyoza;
깻잎 (ゲンニプ, from Korea);
滷肉飯 (Taiwan);
Naan (India);
Kebab (Middle East);
Lasagna;
Kielbasa with sauerkraut;
Empanadas (Central America);
Mole (モレ, Mexico);
Chili con Carne (U.S.).
座右の銘
"Change will not come if we wait for some other person or if we wait for some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek." – Barack Obama, 2008
小さい頃の夢
As long as I can remember, I always planned to become a teacher. What I planned to teach changed over the years. Until high school, I planned to teach history and social studies. From high school until the beginning of college, I planned to become a music teacher (and even started a major in music education). Throughout my career, I have taught English, Japanese, and Linguistics. So even though the subject changed, I’m living my dream of being a teacher.
行ってみたい国・場所
Anywhere where I can step away from the places where most people go, and see the real place and talk to real people, rather than just seeing the mask that is worn to welcome tourists.
My “family” of acoustic instruments (their electric cousins are hiding from the camera).
The people who let me record them for my research are even more important than the theories and the equipment.
